The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies expresses grave concern over the escalating humanitarian catastrophe in El-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, where more than 346 children are facing imminent risk of death due to severe starvation and acute malnutrition. The ongoing siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has pushed the city to the brink of collapse, demanding urgent humanitarian intervention.

According to ACJPS, these children are scattered across six shelters in El-Fashir, their health having deteriorated to a critical nutritional stage:

Yasir Afandi Qurani School Shelter – 29 children

Eilaf Shelter – 33 children

South Fresh Shelter – 35 children

El-Fashir “Bring Us Together” Shelter – 59 children

Abu Talib Shelter – 65 children

Alsalam High School Shelter – 125 children

Since the conflict erupted on April 15, 2023, the failure of the warring parties to reach a ceasefire has had devastating humanitarian consequences. Children, women, and the elderly remain the most vulnerable, enduring unimaginable suffering amid hunger, displacement, and fear.

According to UNICEF, El-Fashir has become a major epicenter of child suffering in Sudan — a city trapped under siege for nearly 17 months, where 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, are cut off from food, medicine, and basic aid after humanitarian operations were suspended.

📢 Call to Action

The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS) urgently calls on:

All conflicting parties to immediately agree to a ceasefire and allow unrestricted humanitarian access for civilians. Arbitrary arrests and detentions must stop, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The international and regional community, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the World Food Programme (WFP), to act swiftly to ensure delivery of food and therapeutic nutrition for malnourished children.

All humanitarian efforts to focus on ensuring safe corridors and secure passage for civilians seeking safety.

Silence in the face of this tragedy risks the loss of an entire generation and stands as a test of our shared humanity.
